2008 Missing Children's Day Poster Contest Information
Patrol, Clearinghouse Announce 2008 Poster Contest Winners
(JEFFERSON CITY, Mo.) - Three young artists from Missouri fifth grade classrooms were selected as the top state winners in the 2008 National Missing Children's Day Poster Contest.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol, Missing Person's Clearinghouse, is a proud sponsor of this annual contest, hosted by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention in Washington, D.C. The contest was created in an effort to educate children across the country about child safety and to make the public aware of law enforcement's continuous efforts to search for and recover missing children.
The theme of this year's contest was "Bring Our Missing Children Home." Students from several Missouri elementary schools participated by drawing an 11 x 14 poster centered around this theme, including a paragraph about what their poster exemplifies in the search for missing children. The posters were sent to the Highway Patrol's Missing Person's Clearinghouse where they were judged by members of the Patrol.
This year's Missouri winner was Rachel Bundstein, a fifth grade student at St. Roch School in St. Louis. Bundstein drew a picture of a maze with a child trying to navigate the maze to find her way home. In Bundstein's paragraph, she wrote, "I chose to draw a maze because I thought it showed how hard it is to get home." For her efforts, Bundstein won a $100 savings bond, a state award certificate and a t-shirt with a screen print of her winning poster. By winning first place at the state level, Bundstein's poster was automatically entered in the contest at the national level.
The second place winner was Ella Wright from Auxvasse Elementary School. Wright's poster depicted a tree with roads and trails on each twig. Children are shown climbing the tree to find the "right" road home. Wright received a $75 savings bond, a state award certificate and a t-shirt.
Third place was awarded to Viviana Delgado of Trailwoods Elementary School in Kansas City. Delgado drew pictures of missing children posted on a brick wall because she has seen posters of missing children in her area. Delgado said, "One important thing is to let everyone know to bring our children back home." She received a $50 savings bond, a state award certificate and a t-shirt.
Each of the top three winners received a congratulatory resolution from their respective state representative and senator. Hawthorn Bank of Jefferson City donated the savings bonds to the winners.
