Persons who have been convicted or found guilty of certain crimes are required to take and pass a boater certification course.

Missouri state law requires all persons who plead guilty to, or are convicted of one of several offenses, must take and pass an approved boater education course - even if that person has previously taken and passed a boater education course. Therefore, if you are convicted, have been found guilty, or have a suspended imposition of a sentence related to those offenses, you are required to take and pass, or retake and pass a boater education course. The offenses include violations of the following Missouri statutes: 306.110, 306.111, 306.112, 306.127, 306.132, and 306.141.

Those statutes include:

  • Boating while intoxicated or under the influence of alcohol or a drug
  • Manipulating water ski(s), wake board or other similar device while intoxicated or under the influence of alcohol or a drug
  • Negligent operation of a vessel
  • Operate vessel on a lake without a boater safety education card (If born after January 1, 1984, or directed by statute)
  • Failure to stop or failure to obey a reasonable direction of a trooper
  • Failure to yield to emergency watercraft
  • Leaving the scene of an accident

Upon successful completion of the approved course and test, the boater must file proof of passage with the court of record and the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
